I'M PETER

 

I have cycled all my life. I have raced, toured, ridden with family and ridden on my own. I have won races, lost races and experienced everything in between. I have used the bike for fitness, for pleasure, for therapy and for adventure - and I have lived and seen first hand how the humble bike can change lives.

As a coach, I have helped riders to cycle the whole route of the Tour de France and guided young riders from youth category to success in the World Tour. I have helped others prepare for their first sportive and supported teams of juniors racing abroad. In short, I can help you prepare for any cycling challenge.

If Only It Was That Simple

 

Time for a structured approach 

There truly is no secret to getting fit, and sadly, one hard ride or enthusiastic week will not get you big-ride ready.

The key is consistency and progression. Build them into your riding and you'll be doing more tomorrow than you can today. 

The challenge however lies in fitting it all into busy lives. What rides should you do? And when? How hard or easy should they be? And when is it time to rest?

For me, coaching means more than just setting a plan - your training should be specific to you. I want to know your cycling history and then work out how to get you where you want to go. I encourage you to think about how you ride your bike. Consider your cadence, your position and your nutrition, even how much time on your bike you waste freewheeling. 

Working with me you will not only build fitness but you'll improve your cycling skill.

HOW IT WORKS

 

To start with, I need to know about you, your cycling background, experience and more importantly what you are aiming for. I find an actual phone call works best for this….

Testing comes next. In an ideal world, you conduct a series of maxiumum tests that gives a thorough picture of current fitness. I use the INSCYD (think inside..) system to analyse your test results and create your metabolic profile report. INSCYD Testing with Soulor Cycles

Armed with an incredible insight into your strengths and weaknesses as a cyclist I create your cycling zones and we can start working towards achieving your goals. 

I coach through Training Peaks, a cloud-based training system used by most professional teams. Through it we schedule rides, upload training data and monitor progress.

 

INSCYD Metabolic Testing

Discover your unique physiology. INSCYD shows how energy systems work together and gives accurate figures for VO2 Max, Anaerobic Threshold, VLamax, FatMax as well as lactate concentration and carbohydrate useage. 

Trainingpeaks

All your training info in one place. Your Trainingpeaks account is the data centre of your coaching. Set your availability, see what rides are set, load your session data, record your notes and get feedback from me... your coach.

No Coaching Tiers

 

I don't like the idea of tiered coaching plans where different schemes offer different access to the coach.

For me, coaching only works when rider and coach have a strong relationship, where coach understands what the rider is aiming for and going through, and where the rider can ask questions whenever they want.

I also know that coaching is more than setting a plan. To improve you must think differently about how you ride your bike. You must plan and prepare, try new things, even potentially fail. My coaching guides you through that and is why I have found that people need help and support at different rates at different times. Some weeks you may have many questions, others you can crack on with the schedule on your own.

And then when it's event or race day, it's time to talk tactics and strategy. 

So, I only have one coaching fee. That way, whenever you need me, I can be there.

 

My Commitment As Your Coach

 

Whether you are aiming for racing success or planning your first long sportive, your goals will become my goals.

I have cycled all my life and I coach to help others find the same enjoyment from two wheels as I do. I bring a deep understanding of the sport, of how to improve and for those of you short on time, how to fit more training into a busy life.

The training set will be scientifically founded, specific to you, based on your riding experience and history, and aimed directly at achieving your cycling goals.

When it comes to your big events I will support you there too. I can help you plan your pacing, assess your fuelling and even sort out what kit to wear. And if you happen to be racing on the cobbles in Belgium, I'll teach you tactical skill and race awareness, I'll help you know when it's the time to move to the front and more importantly, give you the confidence to do so. 

In short - I will commit to making you a better cyclist.

Training Zones and Testing

The saying goes that you can't improve what you don't measure and that is definitely true with cycle training. Testing is an essential part of the process.

For many years riders and coaches have created training zones (the intensity you ride at) as a percentage of your FTP, or functional threshold power. However, we have also known that FTP doesn't work for everyone and certainly not for training levels above threshold. 

Because of that I use a testing system used by teams like Visma Lease-a-Bike and Alpecin Deceuninck that is not based around FTP. INSCYD provides a complete metabolic profile of the body's energy systems. We get accurate figures for Aerobic Capacity (VO2 Max), Anaerobic Capacity (VLamax), Anaerobic Threshold, Lactate accumulation and recovery rates, Fat combustion rates (FatMax power) and carbohydrate usage at different intensities. This incredible insight allows us to target training to create specific adapatations - and to match those to your goals.
